Its been almost 50 years since the NASA spacecraft Apollo11 landed on the moon, along with its human passengers. Since then, you may have wondered just what exactly the point of NASAs series of Apollo missions (任务) was—after all, we still arent living on the moon, like past generations thought we would be by now.

However, those missions meant far more than just being able to put humans on the moon for the first time ever. As science writer Charlie Plain wrote on NASAs website,“The lunar era (时代) helped to create products most of us would be surprised NASA had much to do with and that we probably wouldnt like living without them.” In fact , a perfect example of one of these products may very well be on your feet as you read this passage.

During research for the Apollo missions, NASA scientist Frank Rudy created a new method for making helmets for astronauts lighter. In the 1970s, Rudy applied this method to shoes, later selling his idea to US footwear giant Nike. Soon the Nike airline of sneakers was introduced, and now is one of the most popular brands in the world. And NASA is even connected with a number of things found in our homes.

In the 1960s, NASA asked US toolmaker Black&Decker to help make a battery?powered drill (电池供电电钻)that could be used to extract (提取)moon rock samples (样本). The company happily obliged (感激),and later used the technology it created to make many other products, from cordless vacuum cleaners (无线真空吸尘器) to electric drills.

Meanwhile, firefighters have NASA to thank for their equipment. A fire that happened during a test launch (发射) of an Apollo aircraft in 1967 led NASA to come up with new breathing equipment, whose technology is still in use now.“Today, nearly every major manufacturer (制造者)of breathing equipment includes NASA technology in some form”, NASA said in a news release (发布). So while we may not yet be living on the moon, NASAs inventions have still made Earth a great place to be in the meantime.

Difficult sentence

Its been almost 50 years since the NASA spacecraft Apollo11 landed on the moon, along with its human passengers

NASA

NASA is short for National Aeronautics (航空学) and Space Administration. It is a federal government agency responsible for the US Aeronautics science and Space Program.

NASA is widely believed to be a bellwether (领导者)in space agencies around the world. NASA promotes understanding of the Earth through the Earth observation system and advances solar science through the Solar Science Research Program. NASA focuses on exploring all celestial (天空的) bodies in the solar system using advanced mechanical missions and using astronomical observatories and related programs to study topics in astrophysics such as the big bang theory. NASA shares its research data with many national and international organizations.
